Delays possible as heavy load travels to Southampton

Motorists in parts of Wiltshire and Hampshire are being warned of delays as an abnormal load travels between RAF Lyneham and Southampton.

The transporter, which is being escorted by police, is 81ft (24m) long, 15ft (4.6m) wide and weighs 75 tonnes.

It set off at 0730 GMT and is being driven along the M4 to junction 16 where it will start it journey south.

"Due to its size it will be slow-moving and may cause congestion," a Wiltshire Police spokeswoman said.

"Anyone planning to catch a flight or attend appointments should allow extra time.

"Details of where the load is will be passed to local radio stations to allow motorists to plan their journey," she added.
