More than 75 firefighters tackled a fire at a pub and neighbouring restaurant in Salisbury city centre.

A Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said crews were called to the Market Inn on Butcher Row at about 0050 BST on Thursday.

She said the roofs of both the pub and the neighbouring Charter Restaurant were alight.

The fire service spokeswoman said an investigation into the cause would start once the buildings were safe.

'Pockets of fire'

She said: "Relief crews have been arriving since 5am and the brigade expects to be at the site of most of Thursday.

"By 9am the fire was under control although pockets of fire remain within the two buildings.

"Because of the damage to the pub and restaurant firefighters had to tackle the blaze from outside.

"At this stage the cause of the fire is unknown and an investigation will start as soon as it is safe to do so."
