Self-service machines to check books in and out are to be installed at all libraries in Wiltshire.
The county council said the move would cost £500,000 to install and would save the authority £300,000 a year.
The installation of the new machines will allow the authority to make "overall savings while maintaining our library services."
Opening hours at 21 out of 31 libraries in Wiltshire are due to be reduced because of spending cuts.
A spokesman for the authority said: "It will mean that we will lose some staff. Many are part time and we don't know how many it will equate to."
The Conservative-run authority had said it was looking for "innovative ways" to retain all the libraries.
Some will be kept open by volunteers after the council appealed for help in January.
