Householders in Wiltshire are being warned not to use salt from grit bins on their private driveways or roads.
The county council has offered parishes a one-tonne bag of salt if they have somewhere it can be stored.
Grit bins in 47 parishes will now be topped up if there is freezing weather or snow predicted.
But the council said when the salt is put it the bins it should only be used for minor roads and pavements - and not for private use.
Councillor Dick Tonge said: "We are ready for the problems winter may cause and we want to work with local communities to ensure our roads and pavements are as safe as possible."
