The Bangladeshi flag is to be raised in Swindon as part of celebrations to mark the 20th anniversary of the town's Bangladesh Association.

Organisers say it is the first time the honour has ever been granted to any country outside the UK.

The raising of the flag at the council offices on Monday also marks the 40th anniversary of Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan.

The celebrations start on Sunday and continue until Wednesday.

Enam Chowdhury, general secretary of the Swindon Bangladesh Association, said there were up to 3,000 members of the Bangladeshi community in Swindon and the surrounding areas.

Run entirely by volunteers, the association has more than 2,000 members.

Mr Chowdhury said everyone was welcome at all the celebrations.

"It's making a platform for the community, who ever comes to Swindon and cohesion with other communities," he said.
