Woman arrested after Devizes canal death

A woman has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after a man who was rescued from a canal in Wiltshire dies.

Police were called to lock 40 at Caen Hill, in Devizes, at about 20:00 GMT on Friday after reports of a man in the water.

After being treated at the scene, the 45-year-old was taken to hospital in Swindon but later died at 22:10 GMT.

The 47-year-old woman is in custody at Melksham police station.

It is believed the pair had been drinking in and around Devizes from about 14:00 GMT on Friday.

Det Ch Insp, Ian Saunders, said: "In particular, we would like to speak to a man who was seen walking along the tow path between 7.30pm and 8pm and who was seen waving at another man on a quad bike."

The victim's family has been informed, but formal identification is yet to take place.
