Tributes have been paid to a 46-year-old man who died after being found in a canal in Wiltshire.

Gary Smith, from Devizes, was rescued from a lock on the Caen Hill stretch of the Kennet and Avon in Devizes on the evening of 30 March.

Despite being treated at the scene and taken by air ambulance to Great Western Hospital in Swindon, he later died.

Mr Smith's relatives said Mr Smith was much loved by his family and friends and would be sadly missed.

"He grew up and lived in Devizes all his life and was a very well-known and liked member of the community. Gary had time for everyone and enjoyed socialising," his family said.

"Gary worked as a window cleaner with his brother around the town and local area. He played pool for the Pelican Pub where he had many friends."

A 47-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and later bailed has been released from the inquiry.

A post-mortem examination confirmed Mr Smith had died from drowning.
