Trowbridge binmen to strike over pay for new employees

Binmen in west Wiltshire have voted to take industrial action in a row over pay for new employees.

GMB members who work for FCC Environment in Trowbridge have given notice they intend to strike on 25 May and 6 June.

The union also announced an overtime ban on 25 May and on 7 and 8 June.

GMB's Andy Prendergast said he was "disappointed" the matter could not be "resolved amicably". FCC said it would not impact on services.

'Last resort'

The union is involved with a dispute with the firm about lower rates of pay for new employees compared to workers already under contract.

GMB had until Friday to decide on industrial action following talks with FCC arbitrated by conciliation service Acas.

Mr Prendergast said: "This is a last resort because the company hasn't been willing to put enough on the table to allow us to come to terms with them."

An FCC Environment spokesman said that during the industrial action, the company would "do everything to ensure it has as little impact as possible" on people in west Wiltshire.
