The head teacher of a school in Wiltshire will be absent for the "foreseeable future" while an investigation takes place.

In a statement, John Bentley School in Calne confirmed head Laura Carleton will not be in school for an indefinite period pending an investigation.

The school declined to give a reason for the probe.

Governors have appointed Melanie Sutton, a member of the senior leadership team, as acting principal.

Ms Carleton was appointed in September 2013.

She previously held the position of deputy head teacher at Bristol Grammar School for five years.

Education watchdog Ofsted said it was unable to comment on an internal matter.
