An elderly couple have been hospitalised after burglars broke into their home and battered them before making off with some cash, police said.
The Carellis, who are in their 70s, were attacked by four men who forced their way into their house in Cheney Manor, Rodbourne, at 18:00 on Sunday.
The couple were taken to the Great Western Hospital for treatment.
Det Supt Tom Straker described the attack as "horrific" and said house to house inquiries were ongoing.
As part of the search for the offenders the police dog unit and helicopter were called out.
Det Supt Straker said crime scene investigators were examining the house and he appealed for anyone who was in the area to come forward as they may have information that could assist the investigation.
Police said they were not releasing Mr and Mrs Carelli's first names but that she had agreed for her photograph to be used in an attempt to trace the attackers.
