Scalby villagers lose fight against 520 new homes plan

More than 450 letters of objection were sent to the council

Protesters have lost their fight to stop more than 500 homes being built in a North Yorkshire village.

Plans for High Mill Farm, Scalby were given outline consent this year but a change in planning guidelines meant the application was reconsidered.

It was approved by Scarborough councillors at a planning meeting earlier.

Campaigners fear the development for 520 homes will dwarf the village and cause traffic problems.

When it granted outline consent for the scheme, the authority said it had to deal with the application in the context of regional guidelines.

These guidelines were later scrapped by the government and campaigners were hopeful this would mean the development would be refused.

Scalby Village Trust set up the Save Our Scalby group and more than 450 letters of objection were sent to the council.

Campaigners argued the development was too large and would put too much strain on local facilities and ruin the village.
