Warning to stay off frozen water in North Yorkshire

  • Published

Police in North Yorkshire have issued a warning to people about the dangers of walking on frozen water.

The warning came after numerous reports of people playing on iced-over ponds, lakes and canals.

A 32-year-old man had to be rescued from a lake near Scarborough Open Air Theatre in one of the most serious incidents, police said.

Police have also been called to warn children playing on a canal near Selby and ponds in York, Harrogate and Ripon.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Not only are these foolish individuals placing themselves in perilous danger, they are also risking the safety of those who come to their aid if they get into difficulty.

"We urge parents to drill this message home before it is too late."
