Bomb alert in York sparked by package containing gloves

A bomb alert that brought York roads to a standstill and led to the evacuation of a building was caused by a pair of gloves, it is understood.

Army bomb disposal teams were brought in when a suspect package was found at Aviva's offices on Rougier Street at 0720 GMT on Wednesday.

Police evacuated the offices and brought the city centre to a standstill with road closures until 0945 GMT.

It is understood the package contained gloves with a heating element.

Police said an inquiry into the origins of the package was ongoing.
