Police in North Yorkshire searching for a town mayor and mayoress's stolen regalia have recovered a medallion and made an arrest.

Thieves took civic regalia from the home of Pateley Bridge mayor Chris Henderson, earlier this month.

The mayor's medallion was found after it was sold to a jewellers in Doncaster, police said.

A 69-year-old man from Doncaster has been arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods and released on bail.

The lady mayoress's regalia has not been found.

The chains are believed to date back to 1896.

Burglars gained access to the house after reaching through a letterbox and taking the keys from the lock inside.

They also took a car after finding the keys in the house.
