Crime crackdown sees 'no thefts' in York city centre

A police crackdown on known criminals in York has resulted in a day of no reported thefts in city centre shops.

Extra officers have been drafted in to deter offenders known to be committing crime on a regular basis.

On Tuesday, extra patrols worked with store detectives and shop managers, resulting in no thefts being reported to police.

North Yorkshire Police said Operation Lion was ongoing and was aimed at reducing crime in the city centre.

Supt Lisa Winward said: "We have already sent letters to people who we know are committing crime in the city of York on a regular basis, informing them of our intention to discourage them from further offending."
