Nearly half the workforce at a conference centre in North Yorkshire have lost their jobs, it has been confirmed.

Thirty-seven positions out of 90 at Harrogate International Centre (HIC) will cease to exist.

The centre, which is part of Harrogate Borough Council, confirmed that 28 jobs had been lost to compulsory redundancy.

Nine applications for voluntary redundancy have also been accepted and 15 vacancies will not be filled.

HIC said the situation was "regrettable" but the company needed to meet financial pressures.

Staff have been made aware of redeployment opportunities and given careers support, it added.
