A woman has been detained indefinitely for a hammer attack on an 84-year-old in North Yorkshire.

Ellen Margaret Louise Pounder, 47, of Carperby near Leyburn, was given an indefinite hospital order for her attack on the woman in Leyburn in November last year.

Teesside Crown Court granted the hospital order under Section 37 of the Mental Health Act 1983.

Pounder pleaded guilty to charges of robbery and assault in February.

She attacked her victim in public toilets near the market place on the morning of 28 November 2011.

The local woman was hit on her head six times with a hammer and a stick, leaving her bleeding from a serious head injury, before her handbag was taken.

Det Insp Andrea Kell, of North Yorkshire Police, said: "The incident has left the victim with nightmares and sleepless nights."
