Bin collection times change in Scarborough delayed

A trade union dispute has delayed changes to rubbish collection times in Scarborough.

Scarborough Borough Council had planned to collect bins between 05:00 and 22:00 BST from 11 June.

The council said the plan could save £140,000 a year but it agreed to delay the change while talks continued.

The GMB union said it still had concerns about the impact of shift changes and early morning starts on its members.

Bins in the borough are currently collected between 07:00 and 17:00 and the council has been consulting with staff about the change since January.

It would mean using fewer vehicles which would give a significant budget saving to the Conservative-run authority.

Ester Marriott, from the GMB union, said members were also concerned about the impact of early collections on residents.

She added the GMB hoped it could reach an agreement without resorting to industrial action.

The council said it was confident an agreement could be reached.
