Post-traumatic stress charity opens in Scarborough
A new charity to help ex-servicemen deal with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression has been set up in Scarborough.
The Firstlight Trust offers support to veterans and former service workers at its centre on Stepney Hill Farm.
Dorinda Wolfe Murray, one of the founders, said Scarborough was "desperately in need" of the service.
"We know about 300 veterans in Scarborough and surrounding areas who are in trouble," she said.
"About three-quarters of these veterans are suffering from PTSD or depression and most of them have problems with debt, drugs and alcohol. We know these people are falling through the net."
Ms Wolfe Murray said people needing help would be referred to the charity via the Consumer Advice Bureau, drugs and alcohol rehabilitation programmes or the probation service.
She said the charity had "20 people on the books already".
