The minor injuries unit at Malton Hospital in North Yorkshire will reopen at weekends from next month.

More than 10,000 people signed a petition when the primary care trust reduced its opening hours in December.

The decision was reviewed by the Scarborough and Ryedale Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which took over health services in April.

The unit will be open seven days a week from 09:00 to 17:00 from 3 August, but will remain closed in the evenings.

It used to be open from 08:00 to 21:30.

Simon Cox, chief officer for NHS Scarborough and Ryedale CCG said: "I am pleased that we have been able to come to a decision that responds to the needs of local patients whilst still enabling us to make important savings by closing the MIU (Minor Injuries Unit) during the evening.

"The MIU is not the same as an A&E department and is designed to treat only minor injuries and ailments such as cuts, sprains and minor burns."

The decision to close at evenings and weekends was made by NHS North Yorkshire and York as it tried to reduce its budget deficit.
