Proposals to build 500 homes on land near Malton in North Yorkshire have been submitted to planners.

The Fitzwilliam (Malton) Estate wants to build the new community, provisionally named High Malton, on land off the Castle Howard Road.

The project has been drawn up by the planner responsible for the Prince of Wales's model village at Poundbury in Dorset.

Ryedale District Council has not set a date to consider the application.

Tobias Burckhardt, the surveyor managing the development for the estate, said extensive consultations had been held before submitting the plans.

He added the estate was in discussions with a developer and, subject to planning, the first homes could be built by 2016.
