A man has appeared in court to deny making a hoax bomb threat.

Shamsul Islam, 23, pleaded not guilty at York Magistrates' Court to three counts of communicating a bomb hoax.

Armed police sealed off High Street, in Knaresborough, for four hours after receiving a threat in October 2013.

Mr Islam, from Leeds, who admitted a charge of perverting the course of justice, was remanded in custody to appear at York Crown Court for trial on 19 November.

Police said the hoax call was focused on a takeaway pizza shop.

A second man, 22-year-old Habibul Islam, also from Leeds, pleaded guilty at the hearing to perverting the course of justice and making a false statement to obtain insurance.

He was released on bail ahead of sentencing.
