The body of a new-born girl has been found in a wheelie bin in North Yorkshire.

The baby was found in the communal waste area in Whitcliffe Grange, Richmond, during the afternoon.

Paramedics were called, but the child could not be revived and was pronounced dead, North Yorkshire Police said.

Officers said it was "highly likely the mother was in a very distressed state" and would need professional support.

Insp Mark Gee said: "Inquiries are at a very early stage and our primary concern is to locate the mother of the new-born baby girl to ensure that she receives urgent medical care.

"It is highly likely that the mother is in a very distressed state and needs professional support.

"We urge her to contact the police or medical staff as a matter of urgency as her health and wellbeing is the priority."

Police want to hear from anyone who has any information that could help to identify the mother or who could assist the inquiry.
