Double Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington has officially opened Selby's new leisure centre, three years after the old one was gutted by fire.

The £7m facility includes two swimming pools, a gym, sauna and steam room and a synthetic outdoor sports pitch.

It replaces the former Abbey Leisure Centre, which was destroyed by a fire that started in the sauna in 2012.

The centre opened to the public on Saturday but Ms Adlington led the official ceremony.

As well as unveiling a commemorative plaque, the swimmer also delivered lessons to school children and youngsters from the Selby Tiger Sharks swimming club.

Speaking at the centre, she said: "It's really important for kids in general to learn how to swim.

"It's the only sport that has that life skill element and I think the younger you get in the water the safer you're going to be."
