A 19-year-old man appeared in Belfast Magistrate's Court on Tuesday charged with riotous behaviour.
Craig-Lee Williamson, of Bendigo Street, Belfast, was said to have thrown a stone at police during clashes east Belfast last month.
He pleaded guilty to one count of riotous behaviour at Castlereagh Place on 14 July.
District Judge George Conner released Williamson to appear next month for sentencing.
Prosecutors said Williamson tried to conceal his identity during the disorder by wearing a football scarf.
Following his arrest he immediately apologised and accepted he should not have thrown stones at police.
The judge acknowledged the case was different to those involving petrol bombs.
However, he added: "I don't want the notion to go out that rioting will be dealt with anything less than severely."
Williamson was released to appear again before the court next month.
