Irish police are investigating a boating accident off Inishbofin in which two men drowned.

The bodies of 63-year-old Donal McEllin, a businessman from Castlebar, and 56-year-old Ger Feeney, a former Mayo County footballer, were found in the island's harbour on Sunday morning.

Mr McEllin frequently sailed to Inishbofin in his cabin cruiser and was an experienced boatman.

Police want to establish the sequence of events which led to their deaths.

Mayor of Castlebar, Councillor Ger Deere described the drownings as numbing and heartbreaking.
