Vandals who cut down the Christmas tree in Bessbrook, County Armagh, have been described as "despicable".

A council worker reported the incident to police at 1030 GMT on Saturday.

Ulster Unionist deputy leader and assembly member, Danny Kennedy, said local people were "very angry" at the attack and wanted those responsible apprehended.

The police have confirmed they are investigating the incident which they are treating as criminal damage.

Sinn Fein councillor Turlough Murphy said the cutting down of the tree was a "disgraceful act".

"Only last week, along with the mayor of Newry and Mourne and members of the local community we shared a joyful occasion at the switching on of the lights," he said.

"Now that Christmas spirit and joy has been trampled on by an act of wanton vandalism."
