A live explosive has been discovered under a car at a shopping centre in Dublin.

The Defence Forces confirmed that a suspect device recovered at the Airside Retail Park in Swords on Sunday morning was viable.

Members of the Explosives Ordinance Disposal unit arrived at the scene at 0315 GMT and carried out a controlled explosion.

The area was declared safe at 0445 GMT.

Nobody was injured.

Police said the device was discovered underneath a blue Range Rover shortly after 0130 GMT and the immediate surrounding area was cordoned off ahead of the controlled explosion.

A police spokesman added: "Gardai wish to appeal for witnesses who may have seen anything in the period leading up to the device's discovery or who may have information that can assist with the investigation.

"If you do have information please contact Swords Garda Station."
