Ten families have spent the night out of their homes after a fire in Millisle, County Down.

The blaze destroyed a large garage at a house on the Donaghadee Road.

Acetylene tanks were found on the premises and a 200 metre exclusion zone has been set up by the fire service until 2000 GMT on Wednesday.

Police placed diversions at Moss Road and Craigboy Road and the Department of Environment has been asked to ensure the diversionary routes are gritted.

Councillor Jonathan Bell commended the Fire Service for their prompt response to the fire.

He said: "The fire this evening concerned a garage and acetylene used for welding which has highly explosive qualities.

"Once again it is our police and fire service which we depend on for their expertise in times of emergency"
