The funeral of David Dalzell, the Royal Irish Regiment soldier shot dead in Afghanistan two weeks ago, will take place in Bangor on Friday.

The 20-year-old Ranger from Bangor, was fatally wounded after he returned to his base in Helmand province.

The Dalzell family said they did not know exactly what happened but that their son was killed in a tragic accident.

The Army is carrying out an investigation.

There have been claims that Ranger Dalzell may have been accidentally shot by a colleague as they cleaned their rifles.

The Ministry of Defence has refused to be drawn on the circumstances surrounding the death and a spokeswoman said details of the accident would be heard during an inquest.
