The woman who was shot dead in Portstewart, County Londonderry, on Friday was Marion Millican.

The 51-year-old, who was from the seaside town, died during the incident in a launderette in the Promenade area of Portstewart.

She was declared dead at the scene at about 1330 GMT. A firearm was recovered nearby.

Police are questioning a man in 40s at Antrim Police Station.

He was arrested in the Kilrea area about 20 miles from Portstewart.

Assembly SDLP member John Dallat said the killing had shocked the community.

"My deepest sympathy goes to the family of this woman who was going about her work when she was fatally wounded by the assailant who entered the launderette and killed her with a single shot," he said.

"I would ask anyone who has any information to contact the PSNI immediately."

DUP MLA for East Londonderry, Adrian McQuillan, also appealed for anyone with information about the shooting to contact police and offered the victim's family his "deepest sympathy".

Detectives have asked for anyone who was in the Promenade area at the time to contact them. They would particularly like anyone who saw a gold-coloured Renault Clio car, registration CHZ 771, before or after the shooting to come forward.
