A former champion kickboxer has denied causing the death of his two-month-old baby son.

Stuart Jess, 29, pleaded not guilty to one charge of child cruelty and one charge of causing the death of his son Callum Thai Jess on 24 August, 2008.

Mr Jess, from the Belfast Road in Saintfield is accused of wilfully neglecting his son in a manner likely to cause him injury.

The plasterer was once the British welterweight champion kickboxer.

No details of his son's death were given during the short court hearing on Friday, but lawyers for the prosecution and defence said they were seeking medical reports from various experts including a consultant paediatric pathologist.

Mr Jess was released on bail with the case listed for further review next month and Mr Justice Hart told the lawyers they should prepare for a trial to be potentially heard this June.
