A Donegal fishing family has been hit by a third drowning tragedy in as many years.

37-year-old Cathal McDaid, from Culdaff in Inishowen, was washed overboard off the County Mayo Coast on Tuesday.

The fisherman was recovered from the water by the coastguard helicopter but was pronounced dead on arrival at Sligo General hospital.

Three years ago, two of his uncles drowned in Lough Foyle.

Danny and Francis McDaid, from Glengad, drowned when their boat capsized while they were lobster fishing.

The brothers, in their late 60s and 70s, were taken to Altnagelvin Hospital but did not survive.
