A 31-year-old man has been shot in the stomach and leg in a gun attack in Glengormley.

A man armed with a shotgun entered a house at Mayfield Court at around 2200 BST on Wednesday and fired two shots.

The victim was taken to hospital where his condition is now believed to be stable.

The gunman escaped in a white hatchback car with another man. A similar car was found burnt-out in north Belfast's Ligoneil area a short time later.

Detective Chief Inspector Colin Gillis said: "At present we are treating this attack as attempted murder.

"We are keen to hear from anyone who was in the Mayfield Close at around 10pm last night and who saw the gunman or the white hatchback car.

"We would also extend this appeal to anyone who saw the Honda car being abandoned at Leganore Street in Ligoneil at about 10.30pm or at any other location."

Witnesses can contact police on 0845 600 8000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The mayor of Newtownabbey, Alliance Councillor Billy Webb, said it was a "horrific and brutal attack".

"It is absolutely appalling that someone could do something like this," he said.

DUP assembly member for South Antrim Pam Lewis said: "People capable of attacks like this are capable of doing it again.

"It is in all of our interests that such criminals are taken out of circulation."
