Man dies in lorry accident at Coleraine site

A 39-year-old council worker has died after becoming trapped by a lorry at a council recycling depot in Coleraine, County Londonderry.

He is understood to be married father of two, Alan Devenney, who was from the town.

The accident happened at the Loughanhill recycling site shortly before 1200 BST on Friday.

The Health and Safety Executive has launched an investigation.

The centre is used for both recycling and waste disposal.

In a statement, Coleraine Borough Council confirmed that one of its staff had been killed in what it called "a tragic incident".

"Council's heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time," the statement said.

"The Health and Safety Executive are now leading an investigation and any immediate enquiries should be directed to them."

The council said the Gateside Road site would remain closed until further notice.
