An elderly brother and sister have been assaulted during a burglary at their house in Newtownabbey, County Antrim.

Four men entered the house in Abbeyville Gardens in Whiteabbey shortly after 18:20 GMT on Saturday.

The men ransacked Eileen and Colin Bell's house, stealing their pension books and their winter fuel allowances, amounting to about £800.

The siblings, who are 80 and 72, were both taken to hospital for their injuries but have since returned home.

Mr Bell described what happened.

"There was a terrible bang on the front door and it flung open," he said.

"This guy came in and said you need to stay there and do what I tell you.

"I got anxious then because I knew what they were going to do.

"I'm quite sure they wouldn't like it to happen to their own mother and father."
