Man is charged after attempted carjacking in west Belfast

A 22-year-old man has been charged with the attempted hijacking of a taxi in west Belfast early on Saturday morning.

A taxi driver picked up three men shortly after midnight on the Springfield Road. They threatened to take the car when on the Grosvenor Road.

The driver stopped the vehicle and the men ran off empty handed.

The man charged is due to appear at Belfast Magistrates' Court on 16 February.

There have been 12 other hijacking incidents in the past fortnight, mostly targeting women drivers.

Police have set up a task force to deal with the attacks.
