County Armagh child brings gun home in plastic bag
The mother of an 11-year-old boy who found a gun in County Armagh has said he brought it home in a plastic bag.
Denise Fitzpatrick said her son found the gun in a field at Colane Road near Aghagallon on Saturday afternoon while he was looking for golf balls.
It was handed over to the police and is being examined by forensic experts.
Mrs Fitzpatrick said it was not worth thinking about what could have happened if the weapon had been in better condition.
"They had just been walking through it (the field) and they must have found a golf ball or two and decided to look for more and he came across the gun," she said.
"He put it in a bag and brought it home along with a load of golf balls.
"He just came in and said 'guess what I found'. I said I don't know and he just pulled it out a bag."
Mrs Fitzpatrick said the gun was in such a bad condition that it probably could not have been fired.
"It was really badly rusted - it was caked in rust. When his daddy came home I showed it to him and he said he'd ring the police," she said.
"We weren't concerned about it because it wasn't in a usable condition but we called them and they took it away.
"Just thank God it was in that kind of condition. To think if he had lifted one in a better condition would have been more scary."
