Work has begun in Newtownards to build new homes as part of a £4.5m investment by the government.

Over the next three years £340m will be spent on social housing across Northern Ireland.

Housing minister Nelson McCausland has been in Newtownards to help to demolish flats in the West Winds estate.

"The encouraging thing is that there's a demand for social housing in the area," Mr McCausland said.

"It's a popular area for people to live in.

"Over the next three years right across the province we're investing £340m in social housing, so it's good news for housing in Northern Ireland."
