Man remanded over Newtownabbey pensioner assault

A man has been remanded in custody accused of breaking into a pensioner's home and inflicting grievous bodily harm on him last Saturday.

Christopher Mitchell, 20, faces charges over the attack in Newtownabbey.

The 72-year-old suffered a suspected broken ankle and cuts to his face during the assault at his Doagh Road home.

Mr Mitchell, of Ballyfore Park, Newtownabbey, is accused of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

He is also charged with burglary and the theft of two bottles of alcohol from a property, as well as possession of a Class B drug, herbal cannabis.

The accused was remanded in custody following a brief hearing at Belfast Magistrates' Court on Thursday, and is due to appear again by video link in four weeks' time.
