Dungiven businessman fined £2,500 for grant fraud
A businessman has been fined £2,500 at Londonderry Magistrates' Court for submitting a false grant application to the Department of Agriculture.
Cathal McCloskey, 29, from Teeavan in Dungiven, pleaded guilty to attempting to defraud the department of £1,800.
The application, which was submitted in December 2010, was in relation to his wood-shaving plant in Dungiven.
No money was paid out due to departmental concerns about the authenticity of the claim.
District Judge Barney McElholm said "the public has the right to be concerned about the prevalence of grant fraud".
The defendant was given six months to pay the fine.
