Body of missing teenager Gerard Slattery is found

The body of an Omagh teenager who disappeared almost 40 years ago has been found.

Remains buried in a Strabane grave have been identified as those of 16-year-old Gerard Slattery who went missing on his way home from Mass in November 1973.

Last month, his family asked for DNA tests to be carried out on remains exhumed from a workhouse grave.

Omagh independent councillor Paddy McGowan said: "It must be a great relief for the family."

"At least it will bring closure to a terrible sad tragedy over so many years," he added.

"Today's news is to be welcomed, at least there can now be a decent burial for Gerard.

"It will be a help to the family although there is an obvious air of sadness."

"Gerard's late mother went to her grave never having found her son."

The police said the identification process had now come to an end and they were moving towards a conclusion of their investigation.

Detective Chief Inspector Derek Scott said: "I would like to commend the patience and resilience of the Slattery family over what has been a very emotive time for them while we conducted our lengthy investigation."
