A dog had to be put down after a man hit it five times with a wooden baton, Londonderry Magistrates Court has heard.

William John Ireland, 41, of Knockalla Park, Derry, admitted cruelty to the Jack Russell terrier last September.

On Friday, district judge Barney McElholm adjourned sentencing until 17 August to allow time for a pre-sentence report.

Mr Ireland remains on police bail.
