Welshman Jamie Donaldson has won the Irish Open at Portrush by four shots.

He finally landed his first European Tour title at the 255th attempt on Sunday.

Mr Donaldson, 36, won by four shots from England's Anthony Wall, Spaniard Rafa Cabrera-Bello and Paraguay's Fabrizio Zanotti.

He was overtaken by Swede Mikael Lundberg early in the day, but kept his composure and scored five birdies in the last seven holes.

He closed with a superb 66, only one off the lowest round of the week.

There is speculation that the (British) Open golf championship could be played at Royal Portrush, Northern Ireland, in 2018.

European officials are said to be more than happy with the arrangements for this week's Irish Open on the Antrim coast.

However, it is too early for a decision at this stage.

On Sunday, the final day of the Irish Open, early starters battled wind and rain and holding par seemed to be the challenge.

More details are on the Irish Open leaderboard.
