An officer from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has gone on trial in County Down, charged with fraud and misconduct in public office.

Keith Andrew Davidson, whose address was given as Bangor police station, appeared before Downpatrick Crown Court on Monday.

He is accused of making a fraudulent application for the purchase of his home under the Special Purchase of Evacuated Dwellings (SPED) scheme.

The 44-year-old has denied the charges.

SPED is operated by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE).

Under the scheme, NIHE buys properties from owner-occupiers who are forced to leave their homes because of threat or intimidation.

The case is expected to last up to two weeks.
