A 39-year-old man who hit his partner on the head with a stiletto heel has been jailed for three-and-a-half years at Londonderry Crown Court.

The victim is the mother of Conaghan's child.

The judge described the attacks as horrific.

The court was told the woman was found bleeding heavily outside her friend's Stewart's Terrace home on 25 July last year following an all-night drinking party.

Judge Philip Babington said the the victim had received 12 stitches to two head wounds inflicted on her during the assaults.

He said the defendant had been assessed as posing a significant risk to the public and had a history of violence and volatility as well as a capacity for domestic violence.

Conaghan will be on licence for a further two years after his release.
