Woman and girl hit by car on Benone beach

A woman and a young girl have been taken to hospital after a car struck them in an alleged hit and run incident on Benone beach in County Londonderry.

Shortly before 13:00 BST on Sunday, a red BMW collided with the pair.

Both were taken to hospital for treatment to injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

Police said they later recovered the car at Baranailt Road in Limavady. A 30-year-old man has been arrested.

The mayor of Limavady, Gerry Mullan, said it was a "very unfortunate incident".

"The good weather has attracted many people to the beach - there's upwards of half a million people would visit Benone every year.

"Limavady council does employ a very robust and very effective beach management strategy which in most cases accounts for such low numbers of incidents being reported each year."

But he said banning cars from the beach was not currently under discussion.

"Council have considered many different options in the past and we have rejected them.

"Allowing vehicle access onto the beach does eradicate parking problems.

"The council will be reviewing its policies and this incident will be part of its review," he said.
