Riot accused Mark William Orr 'a former soldier'

A man who threw four bottles at police during rioting in north Belfast on 12 July is a former soldier, a court has heard.

Mark William Orr, 37, from Shore Road, served with the Royal Irish Regiment for six years until 2003.

He faces a single riot charge.

A prosecution lawyer said that Orr told police he was very drunk and had little recollection of what happened after police stopped a march that had been banned from going past Ardoyne shops.

A defence lawyer said Orr had apologised for his actions and added that he was disgusted with himself because he had been involved with security along with the police during his time in the Army.

The judge refused to grant Orr bail because he said he was not satisfied with the bail address that had been suggested for him.
