Woman injured during Downpatrick attempted robbery

A woman has been injured during an attempted robbery in a shopping centre in Downpatrick.

It happened just before 09:30 BST on Thursday on Lower Market Street.

Police said the woman was approached by a man who attempted to steal her handbag.

She suffered injuries to her head and arm during a struggle. She has been taken to hospital for treatment, but her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The robber made off empty handed.

Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them.

Local SDLP councillor Colin McGrath described it as "callous attack".

"It appears that this attack was against a woman who was going about her business at the local Post Office," he said.

"This type of attack in such a public place and during the day time in our Main Street is extremely worrying and totally reckless. My thoughts are with the victim and her family at this difficult time."
