A 32-year-old man has appeared before Coleraine Magistrates' Court charged with the murder of his mother.

Alun Kinny Evans was also charged with possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply.

Margaret Evans, who was 69, suffered fatal injuries at her home in Knockancor Drive, Portstewart, County Londonderry, on 4 June.

Mr Evans was released on bail provided he lives at a healthcare clinic and abides by a mental health order.

He spoke only once, when asked if he understood the offences. "yes, I do," he replied.

Since his arrest on 4 June, Mr Evans has been receiving treatment at the secure mental health facility at Shannon clinic in Knockbracken in Belfast, the court was told.

Police said they had no objection to bail so long as he was released back into that unit.

Margaret Evans, also known as Margo, was a retired businesswoman.
